Red Room Strike Day
The Red Room went on strike. We decided that conditions in the classroom needed to change to make for a more pleasant learning experience.
Mrs McFeely became our union rep to negotiate with management, Mrs Steen. We had a Zoom call with Jacqui White (General Secretary of the UTU) who advised us to ask for a little bit more than what we really wanted to have room to come to a compromise with management.
What we asked for:
1. 30 minute eating time at break
2. Hourly brain breaks
3. No homework
We delivered a formal letter to Mrs Steen outlining the above requests and gave a deadline for talks but as this deadline passed with no negotiations in place we went on strike on Monday 23rd June. We wore our own clothes, had an unhealthy break and refused to do any written work until Mrs Steen agreed to talk to us. The day was a massive success because we got what we wanted!!
1. 15 minutes to eat at break rather than the 5 we currently have.
2. A brain break at 2pm every afternoon plus more at the teachers discretion.
Unfortunately there was no move on the homework request but we knew that was going to be tough.
All in all we had a fun day which ended with our demands being met.
