Hello my Starfish ,

How are you this week? I hope you have enjoyed reflecting on your primary school days through the material I put on the home learning section on the website. Now that your post primary school places have been confirmed, you can move onto the ‘new school’ section when you are ready.

Did you know that today is World Oceans Day? 🌊 On World Oceans Day, people around the World celebrate and honour the ocean, which connects us all.

The aim is for people to get together to start creating a better future and protect our oceans.

In particular, organisers 'The Ocean Project' wish to see 30% of the world's oceans be protected in the coming years.

World Ocean Day is celebrated every year on June 8th.

How did World Ocean Day begin?

First mooted in 1992, World Ocean Day was originally proposed by Canada at the Earth Summit.

'The Ocean Project' then took the idea, organising events and fundraising campaigns to promote and co-ordinate ocean protection efforts.

Then, in 2003, the website worldoceanday.org was created, allowing millions of people globally to get involved with the event.

Why do we celebrate World Oceans Day?

There is a multitude of reasons why World Ocean Day is an important event to celebrate. Here are just some of them:

  • The ocean generates a lot of the oxygen we breathe.
  • It provides food around the world.
  • It regulates the climate.
  • It gives work opportunities to thousands of people.
  • Is home to trillions of fish 🐠 and sea creatures 🦑.

How is World Ocean Day celebrated?

Over the last 28 years, World Ocean Day has blossomed into a massive occasion, drawing in people from all over the world to play their part in protecting the great blue that surrounds us.

In 2019, over 2,000 events were held worldwide in over 140 countries, signifying the huge reach that this event has.
